Asinara: Redundancy Island
On 24th of February, at 10 am, fifteen Vinyls workers of Porto Torres (an italian small town in the nord of Sardigna) disembarked on Asinara Island, a former penitentiary Island and now an uncontaminated and inhabited national park. These workers occupied the abbandoned prison of Cala d’Oliva, where mafia’s bosses were imprisoned. This occupation is the last demonstration of these workers, on redundancy since several months, to avoid the closing of this Petrochemichal site, that was one of the most well-advanced factory in the world.
The Penitentiary’s occupation coincided with the beginning of Isola dei Famosi (italian edition of Celebrity Survivor), a very popular TV program in Italy. The workers would focus the attention of media about their struggle and general economic condition in Italy. In this way Asinara Island became L’isola dei Cassintegrati (Redundancy Island), with its own logo and blog.
Since three months, these workers are living inside the penitentiary without finding a solution to avoid Vinyls closing. Life is hard for workers in the Island.  They feel alone without their families. Sometime they have to stay in the Island for some weeks cause of the sea bad condition, without electricity and hot water heating.
Vilnys company in Italy owns Porto Torres, Ravenna and Porto Marghera’s plants. Only Porto Torres plant has now 120 workers on redundancy payment.
